Research Blog: Commercial Conventions

I have decided to do my commercial on the Levolt Cool Mist Humidifier. Typically in a humidifier commercial, the audience usually sees people using the humidifier in their homes. They also show how the humidifier will improve home conditions and how it will benefit the person.

  • Within humidifier commercials, the setting is usually within the home that the humidifier would be used in. The humidifier is usually set up in the home in different rooms so that the audience can see the different places the humidifier could be use in within the home. It is typically places on surfaces where it would be visible and the audience can clearly see it.

  • The costumes within humidifier commercials are usually clothes that would be worn around the house based on the time of day. If the directors wants the commercials settings to be in the day, the director would make the actors wear clothes that would typically be worn in the home during the day. If the director wants the commercials settings to be in the night, the director would make the actors wear night time clothing.

  •  In humidifier commercials, the directors typically use three point lighting within most scenes. The directors may use low key lighting to show the humidifiers use during the night. The directors might also use high key lighting when doing a close up on the humidifier and is trying to show the features of the product.

  • Within humidifier commercials, the actors usually act stressed out or unhappy before they get the humidifier. Once they place the humidifier within their home, they start acting happy and comfortable within their home because of how good the humidifier works.
  • The actors usually have on natural makeup and their hair is typically styled and looks good.
  • The body language within these commercials is the author usually has an unhappy facial expression before using the humidifier and then they get happy once they get the product. Their posture is usually up straight if they are standing around the humidifier or laying down if they are using the humidifier at night.
  • The props are typically the humidifier being advertised. They angle it to show the brand name and all of the features that the humidifier offers. The sound/music  are just classic beats that are used in most infomercials.
  • Directors often edit the scenes tp make the actors seem displeased within their homes before they get the humidifier. The way directors do this is by making the beginning scenes in black and white and the making the scenes after they get the humidifier in vivid bright color to  make the actor seem happy.
