Genre Research: The Titanic

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

This movie is definitely within he drama/romance genre. You can tell based on the variety of film production techniques that they used which signaled to the audience that it was a drama/romance film. For instance, high angles, over the shoulder, and Dutch. In this film, they use these different shots and angles to emphasize different characters emotions and reactions. To add on, the film includes two and three shots including different subjects engaging in conversation, etc. For example, there was a scene of Jack holding Rose on the boat, standing behind her.  The director also used zoom and tilt movements on subjects to enhance the emotion of the scene. There were also many eye line matches between the lovers making it romantic and heart warming for the viewers. All of these examples made it clear to the audience that this film was within the drama genre, even though it was also a documentary.

•What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?

Within this movie i liked the dialogue. Also, the mis en scene was neat as well. The way how the costumes, props, and setting were designed showed that the directors really put an enormous amount of work into this film.

•What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

I honestly did not like the music. This movie was made to appeal to a different generation of people so, the music used was not very appealing to  me. But, the movie was also a documentary so it would have been inappropriate if the directors used a different genre of music throughout this film. This movie also took a while to get to the point. We all know the original story of the titanic so waiting and already knowing what was going to happen caused me to be ready for the "main event: to take place.
